Alhydran scar cream

Many cosmetic and surgical procedures are performed at Ivy clinics.

Although the skin generally has very good self-healing properties, our doctors, skin therapists and cosmetic consultants always recommend using a scar cream.

One of the brands we like to work with is Alhydran.

Alhydran scar cream

What is Alhydran?

Alhydran is a medical cream used when the skin barrier is disrupted. After cosmetic and/or surgical procedures, you see that the skin barrier is disrupted because there has been “trauma” to the skin.

When the skin barrier is disrupted, the skin loses a lot of moisture, making the skin feel very dry. This can be accompanied by skin irritation, redness and itching.

A good and healthy skin barrier is important to protect the skin from external harmful substances. Also, a good skin barrier ensures that Trans Epidermal Water Loss (TEWL) has a stable level. TEWL also refers to how much water goes out of the body through the skin.

In healthy skin, the superficial skin layer contains about 30% water. This level is important for the skin to function.

With a disrupted skin barrier, the TEWL does not have a stable level. Thus, the body loses a lot of water through the skin. In the epidermis (superficial layer of skin), the water percentage will decrease.

Due to the disrupted skin barrier, the skin is unable to heal and protect itself. Complaints such as itching, redness and dry skin can occur. Thus, proper hydration of the epidermis is important for healing.

What does Alhydran do?

Two skin protection functions

Alhydran has a dual function. Both functions are important to restore the skin barrier.

First of all, Alhydran provides optimal hydration of the superficial layer of skin.

In addition, Alhydran restores the skin barrier. Alhydran contains important ingredients for the skin such as antioxidants. Anti-oxidants protect the skin from free radicals. In this way, the skin can restore itself.

When is Alhydran used?

Immediate hydration

Alhydran can always be used on skins where the skin barrier is disturbed. The effect of Alhydran has been scientifically proven in multiple studies. Studies have been done on the following indications: burns, scar treatment, red/dry and painful skins, itching, aftercare after e.g. surgery and laser therapy, and radiotherapy.

Scars and burns

Scars and burns disrupt the skin barrier causing excessive water loss in the skin, this allows scar tissue to grow in an uncontrolled manner. Alhydran provides immediate hydration, moisture retention and restores the skin barrier to prevent scarring and reduce symptoms.

Alhydran improves skin elasticity, reduces pain, itching and redness. Alhydran is therefore ideally suited to use after procedures such as an upper eyelid correction, lower eyelid correction and an earlobe correction.

Extreme dry and red skin

Skin with a disrupted skin barrier is unable to provide protective function. A large amount of water loss in the superficial skin layer causes extreme dryness and red skin. This can result from skin disorders, chronic skin diseases and radio and laser therapy.

Alhydran provides faster recovery, soothes irritated skin and reduces redness/itching. Alhydran is therefore also good to use after one of our skin treatments such as the CO2 laser, the Magma laser, and other treatments that temporarily disrupt the skin barrier.
