Are botox and fillers safe in the summer?
Injectables treatments with botox and filler are safe to undergo during the summer months, provided you keep in mind some important aftercare advice.
In this blog, we list the aftercare advice for botox and filler treatment in the summer.
What should you watch out for after an injectable treatment in the summer?
- Avoid direct sunlight and tanning beds
After a botox treatment, it is advised to stay out of direct sunlight for the first 24 hours. With fillers, the advice is to avoid direct sunlight and the tanning bed for at least three days. This will prevent additional swelling, bruising and pigment disruption.
- Protect your skin
Always use a good sunscreen, such as those from emerginC, Loveli and Alhydran.
- Avoid heat
Sauna, intense exercise and other sources of heat can aggravate swelling and bruising. Stay away from these for the first few days after treatment.
- Plan your treatment on time
If you are going on vacation, schedule your treatment at least two weeks in advance. This will allow your skin to recover properly and allow you to schedule any check-up appointments.
Do botox and fillers break down faster from the sun?
Fillers and sun:
- Fillers, especially hyaluronic acid-based ones, can indeed break down faster under the influence of high exposure to sunlight and UV radiation. UV light can damage skin cells and the natural structure of hyaluronic acid, affecting the integrity of the filler. This can reduce the durability of fillers, especially if they are injected too superficially.
- UV rays stimulate the production of free radicals, which can damage both the skin and the fillers. This can lead to uneven and accelerated breakdown of the filler.
- Fillers placed deeper into the skin are less sensitive to UV radiation, while superficial fillers (such as skin boosters) can break down faster
Botox and sun:
- For botox, there is no evidence that sunlight or UV rays make the product itself break down faster. Botox works by relaxing muscles and has no direct interaction with sunlight on the skin.
- However, it is important not to expose the skin to direct sunlight for at least 24 hours after a botox treatment, especially in cases of redness or swelling. This is to promote skin recovery and prevent complications such as pigmentation.
- However, too much sunlight can damage the skin and accelerate the aging process, which can indirectly reduce the effect of botox treatments by causing wrinkles to return more quickly.
