When is eyelid surgery reimbursed?
To be eligible for reimbursement for an eyelid surgery by a health insurance company, you must meet a number of requirements. Those requirements may vary slightly from one health insurance company to another, but all have the main feature that eyelid surgery for aesthetic results only will not be reimbursed. There must be (limiting) symptoms from excess skin (dermatochalasis), or from weakening of the eye muscle (ptosis) to be eligible for reimbursement.
Consult eyelid surgery reimbursement
For reimbursement of an eyelid correction, you need a medical indication. This indicates why you are entitled to reimbursement for the eyelid correction. You make an appointment with your general practitioner. He or she will issue the referral for a consultation with a medical specialist. The consultation for an eyelid correction is covered by the basic insurance. If there is no medical indication as a result of this consultation, you may have to pay a deductible for the consultation. The application is handled by a medical advisor. He will determine whether you are entitled to reimbursement. You will receive a written notice.
Lower eyelid surgery reimbursement
A lower eyelid correction is a surgical procedure in which excess skin, fatty deposits under the eye and puffiness can be corrected. Because these indications never cause vision impairment, a lower eyelid correction is considered a cosmetic procedure and, for that reason, is not reimbursed.
Eyelid surgery reimbursement requirements
Eyelid surgery is reimbursed when there is excess skin and/or muscle laxity to the point where vision is restricted. The policy regarding reimbursement for an eyelid correction has tightened considerably in recent years. Of all eyelid corrections performed in the Netherlands, only 5% qualify for reimbursement. To qualify, you must meet one or more of the following conditions:
- There should be nearly 50% pupil coverage by the eyelid or skin fold,
- Paralyzed or sagging upper eyelids due to a congenital defect,
- Paralyzed or drooping upper eyelids due to chronic disease.
