Why sensitive skin is actually just damaged

You hear it regularly, I have sensitive skin, I’m allergic to here and there….

Even at Ivy clinics, clients often report these complaints to our skin therapists. Television advertisements and magazines all feature creams and products that promise to help you get rid of your sensitive skin. But what if you were not born with sensitive skin at all? What if you might have caused sensitive skin yourself? Then are all those creams and products from the advertisements useful? Because sensitive skin is usually damaged, and these damages need to be addressed at the base. Below you can read all about sensitive, damaged skin and the best way to get rid of it.

Sensitive or damaged?

By nature, almost no one has sensitive skin. In many cases, we have made our skin sensitive ourselves through various outside factors, such as using the wrong products. Often that sensitive skin you experience is skin with a disrupted barrier function. Your skin is then damaged, starts to look unhealthy and reacts sensitively.

How do I recognize damaged skin?

When you have healthy skin, the skin barrier is intact. This means that the moisture level in the skin is up to par and that harmful substances from outside cannot penetrate your skin. If the barrier is disrupted, a coarse skin texture with blemishes, a drab appearance, lines and can develop various skin conditions.

But I use all luxury stuff from the perfumery for sensitive skin?

Unfortunately, a lot of (expensive) products do not do what they promise. These products often contain many ingredients that damage and irritate your skin. These include alcohol, perfume and many other ingredients.

Making the skin healthy again

The most important thing is to go back to the basics, undamaged skin. Here it is important that you cleanse your skin well (preferably twice in a row both morning and evening), possibly with different cleansers that both add something. Then it is best to exfoliate your skin for a while, for example with a good scrub or with pads that contain acids or peptides.

Then you can apply serums with vitamins A, B, C, E or peptides. Finish with a moisturizer to restore moisture or an anti-aging, acne or pigmentation product. And you ALWAYS finish with a good SPF, a sun factor that protects you from harmful UV rays. Want to do it all right? Then choose protection with HEV filter (this is blue light). We have great products for this as well at Ivy clinics. We’ll be happy to explain all about it to you.

This regime will restore your skin to its proper moisture balance and keep out all the harmful substances. However, we do recommend using mineral makeup instead of regular makeup, after all, you don’t want to put all your work back in by clogging the skin and applying products that can cause damage again.
