What is acne?

Acne is a skin condition that affects many people. About about 85% of people between the ages of 12 and 24 suffer from acne to a greater or lesser degree.

In acne, the sebaceous glands cannot drain the sebum adequately. Acne consists of pimples (pustules), red bumps (papules), subcutaneous inflammation (nodules) and comedones (blackheads). Comedones are clogged sebaceous glands. Black black blackheads have an open connection to the outside and white blackheads are closed. The occlusion of the sebaceous gland causes inflammation. The result: pimples.

When a person has many pimples, it is called acne. In adolescence, the skin condition is more common in men than in women. Later in life, it occurs more in women than in men.

Acne types

There are different types of acne, besides the common “adolescent” acne. In adults, we regularly see these forms:

Acne vulgaris

This form is the most common, often in mild form. It is also called juvenile pimples. This form of acne is common in people between the ages of 12 and 24. It can show all the typical symptoms of acne.

Acne conglobata

This is a form with severe inflammation and scarring. It is most common in boys during puberty. This form of acne is mainly located on the back and shoulders.

Acne excoriee

This form of acne can occur when pimples are scratched and pinched, we also call it “crab acne.

Acne tarda

This is similar to the common acne, it continues after puberty or starts after. Often it is caused by hormonal changes.

Acne keloidalis

This form occurs mainly in dark skin. It often occurs during or after acne conglobata and manifests as painful and disfiguring scars.

Acne ingeuinalis/axillaris

This form of acne is often caused by androgen hormones. It occurs in the armpits and groin.

Acne Fulminans

This is a very severe form of acne which is fortunately rare. The form resembles acne conglobata and is additionally accompanied by fever and general malaise.

Acne Neonatorum

This form is also called infant acne. It often occurs in newborn babies and can be recognized by small pimples on the face. This form is caused by hormones from the mother.

Acne symptoms

The symptoms of acne depend on the type of acne, the severity of the acne and its location. Possible symptoms in acne at a glance:

  • Open comedones (blackheads): these are the black dots
  • Closed comedones: these are white heads on the skin
  • Inflamed, red pimples
  • Inflamed bumps from squeezing
  • Red or purple discolorations on the skin
  • Acne scars

Acne causes

Acne can arise from several causes. First, acne can be caused by increased sebum production. This is usually due to hormones present during puberty. Especially in locations such as the in the face, chest and back.

The sebaceous glands grow larger and produce more and thicker sebum. Sebum produced in the sebaceous glands is drained into the skin. The drains can become blocked. This can occur due to a thickened stratum corneum. Skin flakes cannot exfoliate properly and clump together. Sebum cannot get out and becomes blocked.

Also, the sebaceous glands contain a certain bacteria. Also called the P. Acnes (Propionibacterium acnes). These bacteria can damage the walls of the drains. This can eventually lead to the walls snapping and sebum entering the surrounding tissue. This then leads to inflammation.

The following factors can affect acne:

  • Genetic influences
  • Hormonal influences
  • Psychological stress
  • Environmental factors
  • High ambient humidity
  • Oily skin, pores
  • Cosmetics
  • Irritation from clothing
  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)

Acne: where on the body?

Acne can occur in various places on the body. The most common spots are pimples on the face, neck, chest and back. The latter form is more common in men.

There is also a rare form of acne that occurs in the groin and armpits.

Acne treatments

At Ivy clincs, we offer several options for treating acne. Together with the skin therapist, we will determine what is best for your skin.

Deep cleaning

A deep cleansing consists of several parts. First, the skin is thoroughly cleansed where the skin is thoroughly cleaned of dirt and cosmetics.

After cleansing, the blackheads and pimples are manually emptied. Sometimes a sterile needle is used to puncture the blackhead or pimple. Then a light pressure is used to empty the blemishes.

Peeling

In many cases, deep cleansing involves the use of a peel. A peel causes the skin to exfoliate. The top layer of the skin softens and flakes off faster.

It reduces skin clogging, reduces sebum production, inhibits inflammation and improves skin texture.

IPL

A pimple is caused by a clogged sebaceous gland. These sebaceous glands are mainly found on the face, chest and back. Therefore, these are the preferred sites for Acne Vulgaris. Due to excessive sebum production, androgen hormones and the P. Acnes bacteria, a sebaceous gland becomes blocked and a pimple develops.

Fortunately, through IPL treatments, we can kill P. Acnes bacteria, inhibit excessive sebum production and reduce skin redness.

Usually a course of 8 treatments is required for the desired results. On average, the treatment is performed once every 2 weeks. The skin will look better and calm down, however, the cause of the acne is not addressed.

Because of this, the acne may come back after stopping the treatments. However, maintenance treatments are possible to keep the acne calm and under control.

Products (Synergy Skin and Obagi).

To fight acne, it is certainly not only about treatments. You yourself can also make a good contribution so that together we can go for maximum results. For example, Synergy Skin and Obagi products offer a solution.

The skin therapist makes an appropriate product recommendation for your skin.

Camouflage

Are you bothered by blemishes and want them to be less visible. Then camouflage suits you well. Just make sure to camouflage the skin correctly.

Some camouflage actually aggravates acne, which is why we recommend using mineral makeup. The skin therapist explains which camouflage is right for you and does a color determination.

Hydrafacial

Is your acne already under control, but you still want to take good care of the skin so there is a smaller chance of the acne coming back. Then the Hydrafacial is for you.

The Hydrafacial provides a thorough cleansing and has an exfoliating effect. Impurities from the pores are removed and provides intense hydration of the skin. Antioxidants are also infused into the skin, protecting it from external harmful substances.

As you can read, there are several options and sometimes a combination of treatments is the best idea, so

Ivy clinics offers a free, no-obligation consultation with one of our skin therapists or cosmetic consultants to determine the best solution for you.
