What are droopy eyelids?
Drooping eyelids, also called heavy eyelids, are common. It is mainly caused by skin aging. The skin loses elasticity and the muscles that hold up the eyelids sag. This can create excess skin and cause fatty tissue, which is located around the eye, to sag. This often gives a tired appearance and can also cause functional complaints, such as headaches or poor vision.
The lower eyelid can also droop with age, causing puffiness and a tired look.
Causes of drooping eyelids
Thus, in most cases, droopy eyelids are the result of the natural aging process. Major other causes are:
- Decrease of collagen and elastin in the skin causing skin sagging.
- Slackening of the eyelid muscles that causes the eyelid to not elevator as well.
- Bulging or sagging fat around the eye that causes a heavier eyelid and can retain moisture.
Medical causes of drooping eyelids
When young people experience drooping eyelids, or when only one eyelid hangs, there is likely a medical cause. Examples include:
- Aponeurogenic ptosis: the tendons of the lifting muscle do not function properly.
- Myogenic ptosis: caused by a muscle disorder.
- Neurogenic ptosis: the nerve that controls the eyelid does not work properly.
- Blepharochalasis: a rare condition due to repeated swelling of the eyelid.
- Ptosis (botulinum toxin side effect): temporary ptosis caused by the (incorrect) injection of botulinum toxin A.
Complaints associated with drooping eyelids
Drooping eyelids can cause both cosmetic and functional symptoms. Common symptoms include:
- Reduced vision or double vision (especially later in the day)
- An oppressive or heavy feeling on the eyes
- Headache due to muscle tension in the forehead
- A tired look, even when rested
- Difficulties in making up the eyes
- An appearance that appears older than your actual age
Treatment of drooping eyelids
The most effective treatment for drooping eyelids is an upper eyelid surgery (eye elevator). During this procedure, the doctor removes excess skin and any fatty tissue from the upper eyelid. This is done under local anesthesia and sutures are placed under the skin. Eyelid surgery is a relatively minor procedure, but it can make a big difference.
Our patients experience immediate relief from symptoms such as headaches and feeling tired, and report looking fresher and younger. Many clients state after treatment: “If only I had done this sooner.”
