What are birthmarks?
Moles are accumulations of pigment cells (melanocytes) in the skin. The medical term is naevi. They are light to dark brown spots or thickenings whose color and shape vary. The birthmark, especially so just above the lip, is known as one of the 7 beauties. A mole in that spot draws attention to the lips and is seen as attractive. In other places, especially if there are many, they are again associated with old age. Scientific research shows that even, flawless skin is seen as youthful.
In most cases, birthmarks are harmless, but sometimes a melanoma (skin cancer) can develop from a birthmark. For medical diagnosis, we always refer to the family doctor or dermatologist.
Causes of birthmarks
Almost everyone gets birthmarks, they develop in the first years of life and increase in number as we age. The exact cause is not known, but the factors below play a role:
- Hereditary predisposition – more common in families with many birthmarks.
- Sunburn in childhood – UV damage increases the risk of new and atypical birthmarks.
Characteristics of birthmarks
- Discoloration of the skin: light to dark brown or sometimes almost black.
- May be flat or have a slight thickening.
- Occurs anywhere on the body, both on sun-exposed and covered skin.
When to consult a doctor?
Most birthmarks are benign. Nevertheless, it is important to be alert for changes. In the cases below, we recommend contacting your doctor or dermatologist:
- Color change (darker, lighter or uneven).
- Irregular or asymmetrical shape.
- Rapid growth or change in size.
- Bleeding, itching or pain.
Mother spot removal
There are several reasons to have a mole removed, such as when it is cosmetically disturbing or frequently irritated. At Ivy clinics, this is done under local anesthesia. We can remove the mole surgically or by plasma with PlexR Soft Surgery. With this method, we vaporize the tissue making the mole disappear.
