What are bunny lines (nose wrinkles)?
Bunny lines are the fine, slanted lines on the side of the nose that become visible when you smile, raise your nose or make certain facial expressions. They usually run diagonally from the bridge of the nose toward the corners of the eyes. At first, you see these lines only with facial expressions, but over time they may remain visible even at rest.
The name bunny lines refers to the typical nasal movement of a rabbit. Many people experience these lines as distracting, especially when they are prominent when laughing or when they deepen due to skin aging.
Causes of bunny lines
- Mimicry and muscle activity due to repeated tightening of the nasal muscle, such as when laughing or pulling up the nose.
- Skin aging due to decrease in collagen and elasticity, causing lines to remain faster.
- Sun damage that weakens the skin and can accelerate wrinkle formation.
- Genetic predisposition such as a strong facial expression around the nose or a certain skin texture.
- Compensation after other treatments, for example, after botox in the forehead, frown area or crow’s feet, with other muscles doing more work.
- Lifestyle such as smoking, low sleep and stress, which affect skin quality.
Types of bunny lines
- Dynamic bunny lines visible only when moving, such as smiling or raising your nose.
- Static bunny lines visible even when the face is at rest.
- Fine superficial lines especially visible in young or thin skin.
- Deeper ingrained lines from skin aging, sun damage or prolonged muscle activity.
Bunny lines: in whom and when do they occur
Bunny lines can become visible at a younger age, especially in people with expressive facial expressions or thinner skin. As the skin ages and becomes less elastic, the lines remain more quickly. Bunny lines can also become more noticeable after treatments with botox in other areas of the face, as the nasal muscle is sometimes used more in expression.
In some people bunny lines are only visible during laughter, in others also during slight facial expressions. How disturbing they are perceived varies from person to person.
Treatments for bunny lines
At Ivy clinics, we first examine the cause and depth of the bunny lines. Because they are primarily mimic lines, relaxation of the muscle involved is often the most effective approach. Sometimes this is combined with skin improvement treatments when the lines are already deeper in.
Botox
The most common treatment for bunny lines is botox. This involves injecting a small amount of botulinum toxin very specifically into the nasal muscle. This temporarily relaxes the muscle, making the lines less visible. The facial expression usually remains natural, but excessive wrinkling is inhibited.
Skin improvement treatments
For superficial or already ingrained lines, additional skin-enhancing treatment, such as mild peels or microneedling, can sometimes be used. These are not the first choice for bunny lines, but can support skin texture and refine the skin around the nose.
Cosmeceuticals
Active skin care with such ingredients as antioxidants, vitamin A and moisturizers can support skin quality around the nose. This does not help reduce muscle activity, but it can contribute to smoother skin and less visible dry lines.
Reducing and preventing bunny lines
You cannot prevent bunny lines completely, because they are part of facial expressions. However, you can slow their development and reduce their visibility.
Awareness of facial expressions
If you notice that you often turn up your nose when laughing or experiencing certain emotions, awareness can help reduce excessive tightening. This is not meant to eliminate facial expressions, but to reduce unnecessary tension.
Sun Protection
Daily UV protection helps preserve collagen and supports overall skin structure. This can contribute to making fine lines less likely to deepen.
Healthy skin care
A mild but active skin care with antioxidants and moisturizing ingredients supports the skin barrier. This has no direct effect on the muscle, but can help keep the skin supple and resilient.
Combination with other treatments
If you have previously been treated with botox in forehead, frown or crow’s feet, for example, you may need to assess bunny lines in conjunction with these areas. This keeps the balance of your face natural.

|---|---|---|
| Dynamic bunny lines | Botox | Supportive skin care |
