What is a frown line?
A frown line, also called the 11 lines, is a vertical wrinkle between the eyebrows. It is caused by repeated tightening of the frown muscles in the glabella region. Initially, the wrinkle is visible only when frowning, but as the skin becomes thinner and less elastic, the line may remain visible even at rest.
Causes of frown lines
- Mimicry, such as frowning during concentration, tension or screen work.
- Skin aging due to decrease in collagen and elastin.
- Hereditary predisposition, for example, stronger frown muscles or less elastic skin.
- Stress, causing the frown muscles to tighten subconsciously more often.
- Sun damage, causing wrinkles to deepen faster.
- Lifestyle, such as smoking, low sleep or dehydration.
Types of frown lines
- Dynamic frown line visible only during frowning.
- Static frown line that remains visible even when the face is relaxed.
- Deep frown groove where a distinct groove in the skin can be seen and felt.
Frown lines by age: when do they occur and what can you do about them
Frown lines do not appear in everyone at the same age. The depth and visibility depend on facial expression, skin type, hereditary predisposition and lifestyle. A different approach may be wise for each stage of life.
Frown lines in the twenties
At this stage, frown lines are usually still dynamic. They are visible only during frowning and disappear completely when the muscles relax. Frowning a lot during studying, stress or screen work can cause early lines, though.
- Awareness of facial expressions and trying to avoid unnecessary frowning.
- Use sunscreen daily.
- Start skin care with antioxidants and proper hydration.
- Possibly a light botox treatment to prevent lines from becoming fixed in the skin.
Frown lines in the thirties
The first static frown lines may become visible. The skin slowly loses collagen and elastin, making it easier for dynamic wrinkles to remain.
- Botox to reduce muscle activity.
- Peelings or skin care focused on skin firming.
- Consistent routine with sun protection and active ingredients.
Frown lines in the forties
The frown line often becomes deeper and more visible at rest. Sun damage, stress and lifestyle now play a greater role. Sometimes a distinct frown groove develops.
- Botox to reduce muscle tension.
- Fillers to fill a deep groove.
- Laser treatments to stimulate collagen and improve skin texture.
Frown lines from the age of fifty
The skin becomes thinner and less elastic. Frown lines are now usually the result of sagging skin, sun damage and years of frowning.
- Combination treatments with botox, fillers and laser.
- Regular exfoliations to renew the skin.
- Skin care focused on firming, nourishment and hydration.
Frown lines in older skin
With more mature skin, volume loss around the forehead and eyebrows plays a greater role. The frown area can look deeper and darker.
- Filler treatments to correct volume loss.
- Laser treatments for skin improvement and structure.
- Intensive skin care, both in the clinic and at home.
Treatments for frown lines
At Ivy clinics, we always look at the cause of your frown line. We pay attention to muscle activity, skin thickness, the depth of the wrinkle and any sun damage. Based on this, we recommend an appropriate treatment with natural and relaxing results.
Botox
A muscle relaxant that is very effective for dynamic frown lines. The frown muscles temporarily relax, making the skin smoother and the frown less visible.
Filler
Suitable for deep or static lines that do not completely disappear with botox. The filler fills the groove and makes the skin surface more even.
Laser treatment
A fractional or CO₂ laser stimulates collagen production and refines skin texture. This makes deep wrinkles and sun damage less visible.
Chemical peeling
A peel addresses fine lines, dull skin and slight skin irregularities. It accelerates the renewal of the top layer of skin, leaving it looking fresher and smoother.
Cosmeceuticals
Active skin care with vitamins A, C, peptides or niacinamide helps strengthen the skin and slows the formation of new wrinkles. These products support and prolong the effect of treatments in the clinic.
Reduce and prevent frown lines
Frown lines are caused by a combination of muscle activity, skin aging and lifestyle. You can’t completely change your facial expression, but you can do a lot to slow the appearance of frown lines and make existing lines less visible.
Awareness of facial expressions
Many people unconsciously frown during thinking, stress, driving or screen work. By becoming aware of this, you can reduce unnecessary muscle tension. Some people temporarily use a band-aid between their eyebrows during screen work to unlearn frowning.
Sun Protection
UV radiation breaks down collagen and makes wrinkles appear faster. Applying a good sunscreen daily helps protect the skin and keeps the frown area stronger and smoother.
Using sunglasses
Many people squeeze the eyes in bright light. This creates extra tension in the frown muscles and contributes to the appearance of frown lines. Regularly wearing sunglasses with UV filter reduces this pinching and prevents the frown area from becoming overloaded. Sunglasses are therefore a simple and effective way to prevent frown lines.
Skin care with active ingredients
Vitamin A, vitamin C, peptides and niacinamide strengthen skin structure and improve elasticity. They help delay the formation of new lines and support clinic treatments.
Hydration and lifestyle
Drinking enough water, a healthy diet and enough sleep reduce skin stress. Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption actually cause faster skin aging and deeper wrinkles.
Skin improvement treatments
Peelings, laser therapy and hydrafacials keep skin supple, improve skin texture and stimulate collagen production. For early frown formation, a light periodic botox treatment can help prevent lines from lingering in the skin at rest.
Work posture and screen use
Prolonged screen work often leads to unconscious frowning. Regular breaks and consciously relaxing the facial muscles can make a big difference in the long run.
