Underchin correction

A double chin correction is a procedure used to correct sagging skin and excess fat under the chin. At Ivy clinics, unlike some other clinics, we use a lipolaser for skin tightening and machine liposuction instead of manual liposuction for extra beautiful results. Because of the refined technique, much less force is required and the risk of complications, such as connective tissue damage, damaged blood vessels and bruising, is very low.

As we age, the body makes less collagen and elastin, causing the skin to lose volume and elasticity and sag. Fat storage under the chin, as opposed to skin elasticity, often increases. Combined with sagging skin, this often causes a visible double chin.

Treatment with the lipolaser serves two purposes: removing localized fat deposits and tightening the skin through the subcutaneous application of heat. The lipolaser uses laser light to melt away subcutaneous fat cells. In addition, the heat helps address sagging from the inside out and stimulates the production of collagen and elastin. Collagen and elastin are the building blocks of firm skin.

In many cases, lipolaser alone is not enough to resolve the fat deposits. Therefore, we combine lipolaser with liposuction. That way, fat cells are sucked directly out of the double chin and possibly further along the jawline.

The result of liposuction is permanent. Once removed, fat cells are not recreated. Because small tunnels are made under the skin during the procedure that contract after which the skin connects the underlying muscle layer, this also has a positive effect on sagging skin. This is further stimulated by applying the lipolaser. With subsequent weight gain or loss, the double chin will not suddenly be visible again, as the removed fat cells cannot return. However, remaining fat cells may increase in volume with weight gain.

Ivy clinics specializes in liposuction and lipolaser with tumescent local anesthesia (the injection of a special liquid to swell the fat cells so that they can be removed more easily). Our doctors have extensive experience with this innovative method that significantly reduces surgical risks, compared to general anesthesia.

A lower chin tuck has a relatively short downtime of a few days to a week. You wear a pressure bandage continuously for four days and then only while sleeping for another two weeks.

Please note! Double chin corrections are performed at the Westervoort (near Arnhem) and Amstelveen locations.

Double chin correction

The treatment step by step

During the consultation, the doctor first considers whether you are a suitable candidate for a double chin correction. For example, if there is too much loose skin, then a neck facelift may be a better option.

We take our time during the consultation. This is because we at Ivy clinics feel it’s important that you have all the information you need to make an informed decision. The consultation is of course without obligation and does not oblige you to undergo the procedure.

The doctor will explain everything about the procedure, aftercare and possible complications. Any medication you may be taking will also be discussed; for example, you may not take aspirin or salicylates before the procedure. Of course there is room to ask all your questions about this procedure. Would you like to listen back to the conversation? You can record the conversation with your phone.

The under chin tuck itself takes about 30 minutes altogether, but you will be in the treatment room for about 1.5 hours, as the anesthesia needs some time to take effect and an explanation of aftercare is given. The treatment is performed under local anesthesia. That means you are awake during the procedure.

The anesthetic is inserted subcutaneously through a thin tube. The anesthetic goes between the fat cells causing the fat cells to swell. The doctor makes small incisions under the chin and near the jawline. A cannula (long thin needle) is then used to suck out the fat cells.

The lipolaser also works with a cannula. At the end of this cannula is a special short wire with red light, it gives off controlled heat, which will stimulate the production of collagen. After the procedure, the remaining fat and some of the anesthetic is massaged out through the opening.

After a facial treatment, you get a pressure band. You wear this band continuously for 4 days and then 14 days while sleeping. The area will be somewhat swollen after treatment. An absorbent dressing will be placed on the open wound that should be worn for 2 days.

After the procedure, you cannot participate in traffic by yourself. Therefore, make sure someone accompanies you and takes you home.

The advice is to avoid sports or strenuous exercise for at least a week after surgery. However, it is important to keep moving after the procedure to stimulate blood circulation so that fluid is driven off. Take a few short walks every day, in or around the house. Take adequate rest.

For pain, you can take 2 x 500mg paracetamol every 8 hours, unless otherwise agreed with the treating physician. Allow at least a week recovery time, the treated area may be blue and feel sore. Avoid contact sports, swimming pool and sauna for the first 2 weeks.

After a double chin correction we recommend lymphatic drainage first and later connective tissue massage, our skin therapists are happy to help with this.

The incisions are so small that almost no scars are left behind. However, you will see discoloration at the site of the scars; after a year they will change color with the skin and are almost no longer visible. You can apply a scar cream to the scars. At the clinic we have several creams available for this purpose.

There are relatively few risks associated with liposuction or lipolaser, making it considered a safe treatment. Ivy clinics offers liposuction with tumescent local anesthesia, that is, without anesthesia. This form has the advantage that the client is less likely to have complications and the recovery process takes less time.

There are risks associated with any surgery. These are generally infections, swelling, bruising and allergies. With the tumescent anesthesia technique we use, these complications are less likely to occur.

There is hardly any danger of damage to nerves or larger blood vessels with this method. Severe complications such as bleeding, thrombosis, fat embolisms and systemic allergic reactions are rare.

The fluid used in tumescent liposuction contains anesthesia, saline and lidocaine as well as adrenaline. The latter constricts the blood vessels, causing little blood loss. In addition, it enhances the effects of local anesthesia. The lidocaine remains active for up to 36 hours, making patients feel much more comfortable in the early stages of recovery.

Liposuction and/or lipolaser treatment is a safe procedure. Permanent problems are rare. However, the skin may turn blue, swell and feel sore after the procedure. During the first 24 hours it is possible that the surgical wounds may leak light (red) fluid. This is nothing to worry about.

Ring the bell in case of fever, blood loss or if wound fluid leaks for more than 48 hours by calling our emergency number where we are available 24/7.
