Skin blemishes

What are skin blemishes?

Skin blemishes are benign spots or bumps that do not cause harm, but are often perceived as cosmetically distracting. As we age, the likelihood of various types of blemishes increases, such as age-related warts, fibromas, angiomas, xanthelasma and birthmarks. They appear mainly on the face, neck, décolletage, back, armpits and under the breasts. Some people experience physical discomfort such as itching or irritation, which can also affect their daily functioning. In addition, scientific research shows that skin lesions – can also affect quality of life. It can make people feel insecure and ashamed, especially if the patches are very visible.

Types of skin blemishes

There are many different types of blemishes. Below we describe the most common forms and what they look like:

  • Fibromas – small skin-colored connective tissue lumps with a thin stalk, often on the neck, armpits or around the eyes.
  • Age-related warts (verruca seborrhoica) – rough-feeling, often brown-black spots that increase with age.
  • Dermatosis papulosa nigra – small dark-colored bumps on the face, occurs mainly in people of color.
  • Xanthelasma – yellowish-white fatty deposits around the eyes.
  • Age spots – Flat brown pigmentation spots, especially on face and hands.
  • Gerstein granules (milia) – small white granules filled with sebum and keratin, often around the eyes.
  • Sebaceous gland hyperplasia – enlargement of the sebaceous gland causing a lump with a dent in it.

How do skin blemishes occur?

The exact causes of unevenness vary. Factors that often play a role are:

  • Age and skin aging.
